Rathlacken Court Tomb Walk

Official opening will take place at 2.00p.m. on Saturday 30th June.

Meeting place: Lacken Church car park.

Walk will be led by Greta Byrne, Archaeologist at Céide Fields Visitors Centre.

This is a relatively easy walk, offering a choice of either 8 or 10 km with a few cut off points if required, with stunning views of Kilcummin and Lacken strands, surrounding countryside and Donegal and Sligo on a good day. It includes a wealth of archaeological features, Court Tomb with associated stone wall enclosure, house structure and Neolithic walls.

Rathlacken tomb was excavated in the 1990's by Greta Byrne, uncovering a circular open stone court opening onto three chambers. Prior to excavation all that was visible was a 34metre long stone peat covered cairn, aligned east … west with a very large stone slab protruding above. It is easily accessible from walk route.

Access is also now available to the 18 th century monument known locally as ‘The Gazebo', built as a folly for Sir John Palmer who then resided at Castlelacken Demense. Greta is happy to share her wealth of knowledge and answer any questions you may have during the walk.

Walking route follows tarred and bog roads and green track, so hiking shoes or trainers are perfect. Do bring fluid and snack.

After the walk you can, if you wish, relax on the beach, visit Lacken Pier and view monuments there ‘The Big Wave 28th October'. Also admire the stain glass windows and bog oak carvings in Lacken Church or have a picnic in the amenity area beside the car park. Come along and enjoy, all welcome.
