                     Local
                    Folklore For
those interested in local folklore and that perhaps aren't
aware, there was a collection of local stories, local traditions,
folk medicine, pastimes etc compiled in most National Schools
in the country in 1938. This
involved the children in the schools interviewing the oldest
                    person they knew. The
work is being transcribed and digitised at the moment (so
that you can search and filter etc., largely done for some
schools, barely started for others) but the original copies
from all schools have been photocopied and can be viewed online.
Much easier to do it in a larger screen.
                     All
schools in Ballycastle at the time are available to be viewed.
There are thousands of pages of material – from magpie soup
for a cure for whooping cough to putting a lump of iron in
the poteen ‘wash' so the fairies would'nt drink it to ‘kidnapping'
