A BALLYCASTLE RAMBLE

By Lewis Keating

Standing on Downpatrick head, on a sacred evening like this,
the sea is almost completely calm, only rippled by the gentlest kiss.
So hard to imagine this placid sea, where the rising moonbeam shines,

can rise to raging tempest like a million roaring lions.
I quietly leave the twilight head and continue on my rambles,
the crows are flying in little groups to their roost above the shambles.

Ballycastle is like a Christmas card at this darkening hour of day,
the smoke of starting fires and the house lights along the way.
I see the lighted windows in each snug and warm abode,
from Killerduff in the distance to the homes on Killala road.

It reminded me of olden customs when each window had candle light,

to guide St Joseph and Mary on the first holy Christmas night.
I can still make out the rugged cliffs with their jagged rocks serrated along to the beautiful beach

where the Ballinglen is consummated.

The street is steep and still now, the church is dark and quiet,
the street lights change from red to yellow to dispel the dark of night.
I see lovely landscape paintings as I look through the gallery glass

there`s smokers outside Healys and Katies, they salute me as I pass.
I am weary now from walking and I fancy a creamy jar
I`ll start with a nice hot toddy in Mc Namee`s tramps bar.
